Retail Director

The Retail Director is integral to Walrath’s success, serving as the cornerstone for ensuring that the landscape materials and nursery products division not only thrives but also contributes significantly to the overall growth and reputation of Walrath’s. Entrusted with steering strategic and day-to-day activities across four retail locations, this role demands a unique blend of visionary leadership, operational expertise, and customer-centric focus.

The Director is responsible for fostering a dynamic team environment, optimizing purchasing and inventory processes, driving operational efficiency, and maintaining an unwavering commitment to customer service—all while keeping a keen eye on the financial health and strategic direction of the retail operations. With this multifaceted position at the helm, Walrath Landscape Supply is poised to solidify its market position, deliver exceptional value to its customers, and set a benchmark for excellence in the industry.

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and collaborative individual to join our team as the Retail Director for our retail and wholesale landscape materials and nursery products business. This position plays a key leadership role in overseeing the strategic and operational aspects of our four retail locations. Primary responsibilities include team leadership, managing purchasing and inventory processes, managing operational functions, striving for excellent customer service, and financial and budget tracking.

  1. Team Leadership:

   – Provide accountable, responsible leadership to the retail operations team, creating a positive and productive work environment with a focus on collaboration and accountability where employees can thrive and work together as a team.

   – Oversee workforce recruitment, development, and scheduling to build a skilled team capable of meeting goals and delivering superior products and service.

  1. Operational Effectiveness:

   – Enhance operational processes to streamline overall workflow efficiency by understanding and updating current procedures, software, technologies, or other tools that are essential to retail operations.

   – Implement and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to understand and improve retail performance.

   – Be highly collaborative with the Production and Transportation departments to align retail operations with the entire organization to achieve company-wide goals.

   –  Directly guide the development and use of digital sales and advertisement tools, such as social media, website presence, advertising, and other digital marketing assets.

  1. Purchasing & Inventory Management:

   – Develop and implement effective purchasing strategies to optimize bulk and in-store inventory levels and maintain a high level of product quality, consistent with business values.

   – Establish and maintain positive relationships with our suppliers, negotiating favorable terms and agreements while overseeing the designated buyers assigned to specific department or location.

  1. Customer Service Excellence:

   – Set and uphold high standards for dependable customer service with integrity, creating a customer-centric culture among the retail staff, emphasizing the serving of others with pride and dedication.

   – Develop and implement customer service policies and procedures to proactively address inquiries, concerns, and feedback, allowing customers to be heard and voice their opinions.

  1. Strategic & Financial Management:

   – Work closely with the Finance department to develop and manage retail budgets to analyze financial performance and identify areas for improvement or adjustment.

   – Develop and implement strategic plans to optimize retail operations in alignment with overall division and company goals.

   – Stay up to date on market trends, competitor activities, and customer feedback to identify opportunities for improvement.

Desired Qualifications:

Direct experience in the retail sector.

A minimum of 3 years held in a retail leadership role.

A bachelor’s degree in business administration, retail management, or a related degree is preferred.

Proven experience in a senior leadership role.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Excellent leadership and team management abilities.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Knowledge of retail trends, technologies, and best practices.

 

Compensation and Benefits

  • Annual Salary: Range of $85,000 to $105,000 depending on knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate.

Position Location:

It is our expectation that the successful candidate will maintain offices at our Gig Harbor and Olympia, Washington locations.  Periodic meetings and events will also be held at Walrath’s Headquarters, located at: 11405 24th Ave E, Tacoma, WA 98445.
